The spreader firing principle is the most widely accepted, proven and user-friendly means of burning biomass fuels. Fine particles of fuel are burned in suspension assisted by the overfire air system. Coarser, heavier fuel is spread evenly on the water-cooled vibrating grate forming a thin, fast-burning fuel bed. The combination of suspension and bed burning makes this method of firing extremely responsive to load demand.

The Detroit® Hydrograte Stoker combines advanced spreader stoker technology with automatic ash discharge and a water-cooled vibrating grate.
- This stoker handles a variety of high moisture, low ash fuels over a broad range of steaming capacities with high reliability, making it ideal for high moisture biomass fuels.
- Higher combustion air temperatures that are needed to burn high moisture fuels can be maintained without damaging the grates, ensuring a long lifecycle for the equipment.
- We can also provide the Hydrograte with an inclined or horizontal grate surface depending on customer needs.
Retrofit Applications
The Hydrograte is also perfect for retrofits, where customers are looking to upgrade their existing equipment. The need for boiler modification is minimized in retrofit applications where space limitations exist thanks to the compact design, and its compatibility with conventional power boiler designs in terms of grate heat releases.
