Pellets present unique difficulties to the fuel feed control required for optimal combustion. The Challenges of Pelletized Biomass Fuels
Biomass fuel feed systems often consist of screw feeders (either single or twin-screw metering bins) and rotary vane feeders. When used for pelletized fuel feed control, issues including the following are often noted:
- Uncontrollable fuel flow due to pelletized fuel flooding past screw flights.
- Inconsistent fuel flow as screw flight clear, a “slug” feeding effect is created. This can lead to pulsations in the furnace and load instability.
- Without a rotary vane feeder, a negative furnace draft can pull pelletized fuel from the gaps in the screw conveyor.
- Standard rotary valves can cause fuel degradation leading to increased suspension burning and hot spots near the distributor throat opening.
- Pellets are not evenly distributed across the width of the distributor leading to insufficient grate coverage.
